Commitment to Service

Theta Xi is committed to its national philanthropy, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As a chapter, we attend the MS Walk in Jersey City every year and run multiple events such as Bacon, Egg and Cheese day and charity sports events that incorporate the Stevens community and help raise money to benefit MS. Theta Xi also volunteers for multiple organizations are the Hoboken/Jersey City area, most recently participating at the Hoboken Homeless Shelter, Liberty Science Center Engineers’ Week and the Boys and Girls Club of Hoboken.

Walk MSIMG_0070

The Walk MS is an annual event that Theta Xi Gamma Chapter has been attending successfully for many years in order to raise funding to fight MS. MS is short for ‘multiple sclerosis,’ and is a chronic, progressive illness that affects the nerves in the brain, spinal cord, and other parts of the central nervous system. It affects over 400,000 people in the United States and may affect 2.5 million people worldwide. More information about MS is available at http://www.nationalmssociety.org.

The Walk MS closest to Gamma Chapter is the Greater North Jersey Chapter of the National MS Society, and occurs in Liberty Park, Jersey City. It is a good time where the brothers and their guests walk a 5 mile path around a scenic park with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Often, several alumni and their partners walk with the active brothers and any guests the actives bring. Guests are encouraged to attend and share in this event with the brotherhood.

Registration for the walk can be completed online, as well as any donations that one is willing to make to the team. Check-in at Liberty Park begins at 9AM, and the walk starts at 10AM. Participants walk around Liberty Park, grabbing a few snacks at the half-way point, and walk back to the starting point, where a light lunch will await those participants. Merchandise vendors are always present, and more than happy to sell the MS T-shirts or NYC magnets.

Engineer’s WeekWP_20140217_15_07_45_Pro

Every year the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City hosts an all-day event for Engineer’s Week. Brothers attend and volunteer to help teach and demonstrate basic engineering principles to youngsters! Some of the activities include Pocket-Science, bridge building, the construction of skyscrapers and much more!

The Brothers enjoyed the bridge building exercise because it allowed the children to see the full scope of a project from beginning to end. Starting with the budgeting of purchasing materials all the way to testing their finished product. Giving back to the community especially in the aspect of the fields we are studying is extremely enjoyable and we love attending LSC’s Engineer’s Week every year!

Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Day

An event that has become a big hit and a staple in Theta Xi Gamma Chapter’s philanthropy initiatives is our Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Day! This event has been running for two semesters so far and it has been a great success. With all proceeds going to our national philanthropy (The National Multiple Sclerosis Society), the Brothers whip up a couple different styles of breakfast sandwiches including, bacon egg and cheese, pork roll egg and cheese, and just egg and cheese. The students love the fact that these sandwiches can be delivered to them in the morning and they don’t even get out of bed. Of course we take duckbills! Look out for BEC Day this upcoming semester…you will not want to miss this!

MADD Walk

For the past three years, the brothers of Theta Xi have dedicated their madd walktime and effort into helping the annual MADD Walk on Staten Island. MADD, or Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is an organization which fights to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. Theta Xi fully supports the efforts of MADD and looks forward to continue helping the organization in the future.

The Brothers enjoy giving back to our national philanthropy, the community of Stevens, and the community of Hoboken. Be on the look out for our upcoming events so you too can be a helping hand for these great causes!
